Cavetown Provides A Musical Home For Fans During Running With Scissors Tour
Every live show holds the same weight; someone there is seeing their favorite artist for the first time. Likely someone whose music helped them through a hard time, helped them realize feelings they didn’t know they were hiding, or helped them discover a part of themselves. However, it seemed for Cavetown, most everyone in the room had a spiritual or almost religious experience seeing lead singer, Robin, live.

Cavetown, alongside opener Chloe Moriondo, brought the Running With Scissors tour to Stubb’s Amphitheater in Austin, TX, bringing fans of all kinds together to enjoy songs from the new album. Chloe opened the show with several songs from her most recent album, as well as some older fan favorites. The bubbly-pop artist filled the crowd with energy as she danced around the stage, shredded on the guitar, and sang her heart out.

While most newer Cavetown fans may not know Chloe, older fans are very familiar with her as she and Robin have been close friends for years, often making music together. During her set, she even played a new song that she and Robbie wrote together earlier this year. While walking around the crowd, I saw many fans who were unfamiliar with her music, but by the end were looking her up on Spotify and saving a few songs. She closed the set with her hit song featured in the Netflix series, Heartstopper, “I Wanna Be With you”.
I swear I say this every review, but Cavetown genuinely blew me away with his set. The energy Cavetown brings to the stage is so unique and fun. It’s immediately apparent how closely Robin connects to the music he’s writing and putting out, as well as how much it connects the fans to him and to each other. As soon as Robin took the stage, pride flags and fans went into the air and set the tone for the entire show. If there’s one thing happening at a Cavetown show, it’s going to be supporting and spotlighting the LGBTQ+ community to make sure that everyone in attendance is comfortable and has a space to just be themselves for the evening without worrying too much about others around them. Fans immediately locked in and showed their true colors, singing and dancing as loud and as hard as they could for the whole evening.

And then again, so did Robin. The first thought that popped into my head while watching him perform is that he is genuinely my favorite wet noodle. He bounces around on stage, often with a guitar, and dances the exact way that music makes us all feel. It can definitely be hard to let yourself go in such a public setting to just be and experience music in the most full way, letting yourself move alongside the song in any way. Yet, once Robin brings this “dance in your room in front of your mirror” energy, it flows out into the crowd to explode into the most expressive and beautiful dance party you’ve ever seen.

A moment that really stuck with me was the speech that Robin gave before “Micah”. He spoke on losing his only child status this past year with the birth of his baby sister. He wrote the song before his sister was born to process all of the emotions he was feeling about this new situation he’d never been in and how he wanted his little sister to see him and their relationship. At the end, he tells that she’s not yet speaking but growing every single day, finishing with “I can’t wait to see what she has to say”. I was fully in tears by this point, having experienced a similar moment in my life with the birth of my little brother.

I just have to say, the show that Cavetown puts on is so special and unique. It allows you to look at yourself introspectively, feel whatever music makes you feel, and just be present in the moment with everyone around you. His fans are so welcoming, and beautiful, and being a part of that crowd was one of the best privileges I’ve had this year.
