Lunar Vacation Ends Levitation With A Cosmic Show in Austin
Lunar Vacation at Levitation was one of those shows where I left feeling like I had just experienced something completely new and life changing.
I've been a fan of Lunar Vacation for a while, so getting to see them live for the first time was already something I was really excited about, but I didn't expect the whole room to feel quite as dreamy as it did. Their music has this hazy, floaty quality to it, and hearing it live while these psychedelic and nostalgic visuals were being projected across the stage made everything feel deeper and more immersive than I ever could have imagined. The lights would shift and the projector would throw different colorful images across the band, and there were moments where I genuinely felt like I was somewhere else. It was such a perfect atmosphere for their music.
It really surprised me how relaxed the entire room felt. Lunar Vacation puts on a really chill show, but it didn't feel like the kind of chill where everyone is standing still and just quietly staring the band because they don't know any of the songs. It was more like everyone just knew that this was our little hangout for the night. People were just talking, dancing, singing along, and enjoying the music with the strangers around them. I almost got a sense of nostalgia for the 80s when you and your friends would gather around a record player for the sole purpose of listening to and enjoying the music together.
At one point in the night, I literally starting tearing up at the girlhood in the audience. There was one girl in the crowd who brought bubbles and started passing them out to everyone around her. She'd hold the bubble wand out while people took turns blowing bubbles, and eventually there were bubbles floating all throughout the crowd, having the colorful visuals projected through them while Lunar Vacation played. This was probably the one of the most fun and silly things that could possibly happen during this set.
I think that's what made the whole show work so well. Nobody seemed particularly interested in being cool. There wasn't this pressure to be the most enthusiastic person in the room or to prove that you were the biggest Lunar Vacation fan there. Everyone was just there in that moment. Hanging out, listening to the music, blowing bubbles, and possibly floating into outer space.
And of course, Lunar Vacation themselves were incredible. Their live performance had the same dream-like quality as their recordings, but hearing these songs in a room full of people gave them a completely different feeling. They also played some new music from their upcoming album, which made the whole experience feel even more special. They talked a little bit about how this will be their first album they've made entirely independently, and there was something really exciting about getting to hear a glimpse of that next chapter from them in a room that felt so intimate and relaxed.
They never needed to do anything overly dramatic to keep people engaged, either. The music really spoke for itself, and the band seemed completely comfortable settling into the songs and letting the atmosphere build around them. There were moments where they would lock into a groove and it felt like the entire room just disappeared into the music for a minute. It was exactly the kind of cosmic performance I hoped for.
For my first Lunar Vacation show, I have to say that I'm hooked and will be seeing them again when they're back in Austin after their new music releases. Their show was so so special, with all of these things coming together in such an unexpected way and creating this little world for the duration of the set. It was truly one of the most incredible shows I've ever experienced. Definitely the most cinematic set, for sure.
