Chicago shoegaze band flowersatherfeet has done it again. I’ve been listening to their new single, “Name,” on repeat since it was released and sending it to everyone I know. I don’t know what they put into everything they release, but it must be addicting. Beware when you listen, because you won’t be able to stop.
“NAME” is a beautiful depiction of relying on someone else for emotional support and stability, only for that person to fall apart too, forcing both people into a vicious cycle of mutual destruction. This is symbolized by the repetitive main lyric, “I’m calling out your name,” followed by the shift in pronouns to, “You’re calling out my name.” That subtle switch reveals how these toxic relationships and friendships are rarely one-sided. Instead, both people become dependent on each other, creating a cycle that is difficult to escape.
The repetition of these lyrics drives home just how cyclical and consuming these relationships can be, and I think that is my favorite part of the song. In addition, the striking guitar melodies paired with the ethereal vocals create an eerily beautiful listening experience. It scratches your brain in the best possible way.
